Student Masks Needed!

Hello wonderful seamstresses!

It has been a while since we’ve put out a request for masks.  As many of you may know, we have a partnership with Bells Hill Elementary where we help provide school uniforms each year and provide reading buddies weekly.  However, with COVID regulations, our reading buddies are not able to go into the schools.  So, we have asked if there is another way we can support Bells Hill during this time and the need for child size (and some adult size) masks came to light.  Many of the children at Bells Hill are showing up at school in the morning with no mask, a dirty mask (because they only have 1 or 2), etc.

Would you be willing to sew some masks for Bells Hill Elementary?   They will take both child size and adult size masks – many of the older kids prefer the adult sizes.  You can bring them by the church offices and Ryan will be sure they get delivered to the right people at Bells Hill Elementary.  There is also no specific time limit – although, the sooner the better.  We will deliver them as they arrive at FBC.  (If you’d prefer a porch pick-up, let me know and we can work out a time for that option as well!)

There is not a specific pattern that you have to use; however, many of our FBC kids have enjoyed the fit of this mask: https://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/simple-step-by-step-tutorial-for-the-olson-mask-pattern.  (I’ve attached the pattern as well.)  We used the “Child Size Large” for most of our grade school kids.  However, we altered the pattern a bit:

  • For one, we used the face pattern for both the inside and outside of the mask (didn’t use the cheek or mouth pieces.)
  • Additionally, we cut about an inch off the ear side of the patterns before cutting them out of fabric.
  • Once you sew two sets of face pieces together, you place them right sides together and sew along the top and bottom.
  • Cut about 6” of elastic for each side, pin into sides.  Topstitch to secure elastic.
  • VOILA – mask made!
  • I hope that makes sense? If not, let me know and I’ll try to explain it more thoroughly!

If you can help with this, can you let me (Robin) know how many you’d be willing to make?

Thanks so much!
